The Herb Garden, Brought to the Table

Reader, Herbs don't ask to be seen. They ask to be smelled, brushed by a hand, and noticed up close. Taken from the garden, herbs settle easily into a vase, sometimes paired with a few flowers in the same soft palette. Branches of basil beside loose stems of mint and feathery dill, joined by a handful of zinnias in matching tones, or whatever bloom is at its best that week. It's an arrangement built on texture and scent as much as color, restrained, but far from plain. Set on a counter or near a sunlit window, it fills a room with quiet color and fragrance. Or keep them rooted. A row of potted herbs down the center of a table changes the shape of a gathering entirely. Rosemary standing tall beside low mounds of thyme, the delicate white and yellow of chamomile close by, oregano trailing over the rim of its pot.
